How to keep your kidney healthy?

Kidneys are located at the bottom of the rib cage on both sides of the spine. They perform various functions like filtering waste products, impurities from the blood, and excess water. They also regulate pH, potassium, and salt levels in the body, and produce hormones that regulate blood pressure and control RBCs production. So, maintaining good kidney health is of utmost importance for overall well-being. In this article, we will see several ways in which you can keep your kidney healthy.

Keep yourself hydrated:

Drinking water keeps your kidney healthy and eliminates all the waste. So, you should always keep yourself hydrated. You must also ensure that your urine has no color and if the color of the urine is dark, you may drink water as it may indicate that you are dehydrated. If it is too hot, you should drink excessive water as there is a lot of sweating.

Eat healthy food:

You must ensure that you eat food that is rich in vitamins and minerals. You should take a well-balanced diet that is rich in nutrients. Food products like gram, rice, wheat, bread, etc. have nutrients that are beneficial for the body. Also, avoid eating food that has too much salt or fat.

Stay active:

Doing regular exercise and staying fit is one of the best ways to keep your body healthy. You should ensure that you do some exercise regularly. It helps to lower the risk of chronic kidney disease, boost blood pressure, and heart health.

Control blood sugar:

People who have diabetes are at risk of kidney damage. They should ensure that the blood sugar is always in control. Their body cells may not be able to use the glucose in the blood that forces the kidney to perform this function and in turn puts pressure on the kidneys. So, it is necessary to control the blood sugar, and if it is detected early, your doctor may suggest some preventive measures.

Maintain blood pressure level:

120/80 is considered to be a good BP. The range between 120/80 to 139/89 is considered a level of pre-hypertension. And, anything above 140/90 is categorized as high BP. You should ensure that your BP is in control as it may have a significant impact on the kidneys. It may damage the kidney and if you have any other problem like heart disease or diabetes, the results could be dreadful.

Limit smoking and drinking:

You should try to limit your smoking and drinking habits. Drinking too much alcohol could raise blood pressure which is considered one of the major causes of kidney problems. So, try to curb these habits and if not, try limiting them.

Conclusion

Maintaining good kidney health is very important and if not, it could lead to various kidney problems. Doctors may then suggest various tests like blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound, MRI, CT Scan, etc. So ensure you are taking proper measures to keep your kidney healthy.
