Hip MRI Scan

A hip MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the hip joint and surrounding tissues. It does not involve ionizing radiation, making it a safer option for many patients.

Why is it Performed?

A hip MRI is typically performed to diagnose or evaluate:

  • Joint disorders like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or synovitis.
  • Labral tears (damage to the cartilage ring around the hip socket).
  • Avascular necrosis, where reduced blood flow leads to bone damage.
  • Stress fractures or soft tissue injuries like muscle tears or bursitis.
  • Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) or hip dysplasia.
  • Tumors or infections in the hip area.
  • Persistent, unexplained hip pain

What are the benefits?

  • Non-invasive: No surgery is required.
  • Highly detailed images: Provides excellent visualization of bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, enabling accurate diagnoses.
  • No radiation: MRI uses magnetic fields rather than X-rays or CT scans.
  • Early detection: Can identify conditions like avascular necrosis or stress fractures before they progress.

What are the limitations?

  • Cost and availability: MRI scans are more expensive and may not be available in all facilities.
  • Time-consuming: A typical scan takes 30–60 minutes and requires patients to remain still.
  • Claustrophobia: Some patients may feel uncomfortable in the enclosed MRI machine.
  • Metal sensitivity: Patients with certain implants or devices may not be able to undergo an MRI.
  • Motion sensitivity: Any movement can blur images, and sedation may be necessary for children or individuals unable to stay still.
  • Contrast reactions: Though rare, some people may react to the gadolinium contrast dye used to enhance images

How to Book a Scan

I don't have a referral letter

No referral? No problem. Fill in our short self-referral form and one of our partner private GPs will review your request, refer you for the right scan and prepare the scan instructions. The imaging centre will then call you to arrange your appointment. After your scan, the report is sent to the GP, who will share the results with you. This service is provided by Dr Online Ltd.

I have a referral letter

If you've been referred by a GP, consultant, physiotherapist or osteopath, simply upload your referral letter along with their contact details. We'll send it to your nearest or preferred imaging centre, and their team will call you to book a time that suits you. After your scan, the report is sent to the clinician who referred you. Your clinician can also send the referral to us directly.
