Coccyx MRI Scan

A Coccyx MRI is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create detailed pictures of the coccyx (tailbone) and surrounding tissues. This non-invasive scan helps assess soft tissues, bones, nerves, and any abnormalities in the coccygeal region.

Why is it Performed?

A coccyx MRI is typically performed to:

  1. Diagnose Pain or Injuries:
    • Identify the cause of tailbone pain (coccydynia), especially if other imaging techniques (e.g., X-rays) fail.
    • Assess fractures, dislocations, or degenerative changes in the coccyx.
  2. Detect Tumors or Infections:
    • Identify soft-tissue tumours, osteomyelitis (bone infections), or other abnormalities such as chordoma or cysts.
  3. Evaluate Post-Traumatic Issues:
    • Assess damage after falls or other traumatic injuries to the tailbone.
  4. Prepare for Surgery:
    • Provide detailed imaging for surgical planning, such as in tumour resections or coccygectomy (tailbone removal)

What are the benefits?

Detailed Imaging:

  • Provides highly detailed views of both bone and soft tissue structures.
  • Allows early and accurate detection of abnormalities.

Non-Invasive:

  • No exposure to ionizing radiation, making it safer than CT scans.

Comprehensive Diagnosis:

  • Can identify issues not visible on other imaging tests, such as inflammation or soft-tissue abnormalities

What are the limitations?

Claustrophobia:

  • The enclosed nature of an MRI machine can cause anxiety in some patients.

Exclusion of Metal Implants:

  • Patients with certain implants (e.g., pacemakers, metal rods) may not be eligible.

Limited Weight Capacity:

  • Many MRI machines have weight limits, often around 120-140 kg.

Motion Sensitivity:

  • Any movement during the scan can distort images, requiring retakes.

Contrast Agent Risks:

  • For contrast-enhanced scans, patients with kidney or liver impairments may face additional risks.

Specific View Requirement:

  • The coccyx is a small structure, so specific protocols (e.g., sagittal views) are essential for proper imaging, often requiring specialized orders

How to Book a Scan

I do not have a Referral Letter

If you do not have the referral letter from your GP or any clinician - please fill in the Self Refer form and we will connect you to a third party GP practice or an independent private doctor who can recommend an appropriate scan and prepare the scan instructions. The imaging centre staff will then contact you to provide an appointment. After the appointment the reports are sent to the same doctor and they forward it to you.

I have a Referral Letter

If you have a referral letter from your GP, Consultant, Physiotherapist or Osteopath - simply upload the letter and add their contact details. We will forward it to your nearest or chosen imaging centre and their staff will call you to provide an appointment as per your convenience. The report will be sent to the referring clinician after the scan. Your referring clinician can also send us the referral directly and we will forward to the imaging centre.
