Pelvis MRI Scan

A pelvis MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the structures within the pelvic region, including bones, blood vessels, muscles, and organs such as the bladder and reproductive organs.

Why is it Performed?

 Pelvic MRI is used to:

  • Diagnose causes of pelvic pain, injuries, or trauma.
  • Detect abnormalities like tumours, fibroids, or endometriosis.
  • Evaluate the reproductive organs, particularly in cases of infertility or irregular bleeding.
  • Assess cancers of the pelvic organs, including staging and spread.
  • Identify structural abnormalities, inflammatory bowel disease, or vascular conditions

What are the benefits?

  • High Detail: Offers detailed images of soft tissues, often superior to X-rays or CT scans.
  • Non-Radiative: Does not use harmful ionising radiation, making it safer, especially for pregnant patients.
  • Early Diagnosis: Effective in detecting earlier-stage conditions, and improving treatment outcomes.
  • Comprehensive View: Allows imaging of the pelvic region in detail, helping assess various causes of pain or dysfunction

What are the risks involved?

  • Implanted Devices: Metallic implants like pacemakers may interfere with the MRI or cause malfunction.
  • Gadolinium Contrast: If contrast dye is used, it carries a small risk of allergic reaction or retention in the body.
  • Claustrophobia: Some patients may feel uncomfortable in the enclosed MRI scanner.
  • Physical Artifacts: Movements like breathing or bowel motion can distort the images

What are the limitations?

Sensitivity to Motion: Even minor movements, including involuntary actions like breathing or bowel motions, can blur images, reducing diagnostic quality.

Difficulty with Large Patients: Standard MRI machines may be uncomfortable or unusable for patients with larger body sizes, though open MRI machines can help in some cases.

Contrast Limitations: While gadolinium contrast agents enhance imaging, they are not suitable for all patients, especially those with severe kidney problems. Moreover, contrast does not always help differentiate between certain conditions, such as benign and malignant tumours.

Implant Restrictions: Patients with some metal implants, like certain pacemakers or cochlear implants, may not be eligible for MRI due to interference with the magnetic field.

Pregnancy Precautions: Though considered safe, MRIs are typically avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy unless absolutely necessary

How to Book a Scan

I don't have a referral letter

No referral? No problem. Fill in our short self-referral form and one of our partner private GPs will review your request, refer you for the right scan and prepare the scan instructions. The imaging centre will then call you to arrange your appointment. After your scan, the report is sent to the GP, who will share the results with you. This service is provided by Dr Online Ltd.

I have a referral letter

If you've been referred by a GP, consultant, physiotherapist or osteopath, simply upload your referral letter along with their contact details. We'll send it to your nearest or preferred imaging centre, and their team will call you to book a time that suits you. After your scan, the report is sent to the clinician who referred you. Your clinician can also send the referral to us directly.
